I am the Co-Director ofAltogether Better, an organisation which aims to unlock the full potential of people to transform lives through improving health and well-being. 

We have been shortlisted to the finals of the nations favourite National Lottery funded project. A final round of public voting began on the 2nd of September running to Sunday 25th September

The winners will be announced on the 5th November on a live show on BBC1.

 

Altogether Better has trained and supported over 15,000 people we call Community Health Champions to voluntarily support over 90,000 people in their communities and workplaces to improve their health and well-being. Many of our amazing Community Health Champions have often had challenging lives and health problems of their own to deal with and draw upon this life experience to carry out activities in their communities which really makes a big difference.  

 

Winning this award would be a huge thank you to all our Community Health Champions and I hope would show them that they are valued and important members of our communities.

There are Community Health Champions supporting their communities in a whole range of health areas including stopping smoking. Some great examples in Sheffield see http://www.sheffieldwellbeing.org.uk/ for further info

I'm delighted to have found Altogetherbetter  - it looks as though there might be scope for sharing ideas with Tobacco Control Alliances that we are helping to experiment with social media and strong networks. More here. Are any of your projects and champions in that field?

There are some fantastic examples of community empowerment in health and well-being in this country (and beyond) and a wealth of evidence to show that empowerment can have a real impact on health and well-being.

 

Community empowerment has always been the poor relation in health and in public health. Despite the 'Big Society' policy agenda and the Marmot findings, as a process for reducing health inequalities it continues to be marginalised.

 

Is there is a will and a way for people and organisations to collaborate on a grand scale in order to drive a new community led health system?
