Community organising vs Community development

Started by Mark Parker. Last reply by Phil Green Feb 20. 63 Replies

I am keento explore the role that community organising plays distinct from that of community development. Much of the debate around what organising has to offer in the UK is mired in the sense that "we've been doing that for years." I'd like to take…Continue

Can self-organising or citizen-centred participation be part of the mix?

Started by Phil Green. Last reply by Eileen Conn Feb 19, 2011. 8 Replies

I'm not talking about who gets such and such a contract. Or about whether these things are already part of the mix, I'd suggest they are, and have been a growing part for some time. It's more a question of whether there are ways in which such…Continue

Hi Emma and all, have started a blogroll in the 'few links' box above but would be good to set up a separate "Community organising resources, your suggestions" discussion or page, including merging with stuff from Community organising resources What do you think? Happy to do this, if you like, but may take me a while to get to!

Hi All,

I realise that many of you are located in the North so it may be a long way to travel but there are a few invites set aside for Our Society folks to join us at the Citizens UK National Assembly in Central London this Monday 2PM (Press Conference at 1:30PM). Would anyone like a Press Ticket? Please get in touch with either alvin.carpio@londoncitizens.org.uk or me jana.mills@gmail.com.

Cheers,
Jana

I've just blogged a piece elsewhere on the site, with a roundup of announcements about community organisers, NESTA Neighbourhoods, and 50 areas supported by the Big Local Trust.

There's some Big Society discussion on Linkedin here
http://www.linkedin.com/groupItem?view=&srchtype=discussedNews&...

which is interesting because people are talking about participation and partnership ... fields I've been much involved in previously, but now appear out of fashion, at least as terms, in favour of organising, co-design, co-production. Or am I just not listening in the right places?

Thanks Colin - I've now added a forum post to see if anyone is interested in collaborating on bookmarking resources. Are you up for that? I guess you've got lots and would know information officers who might be interested.

Thanks for this David

This is a really interesting site for developing an understanding of the US form of community organising. Well worth a visit. I'll try and find the time over the next few days to add some of my own thoughts re community organising, community development and the big society aka the points Gabriel and i made in our recent paper mentioned below.
